Why You’re Not Getting Interviews—Even If You’re Qualified?
2025 is turning out to be a particularly difficult time to land an interview across a large number of career areas. This is in great part due to the uncertainty of the economic outlook (What impact will tariffs have? What is going to be the impact of AI – it’s going to be much larger and faster than we currently imagine; are DOGE-initiated employment reductions likely to be upheld?), but may also reflect the continued shift in the relative strengths of labor and capital, with the long-term weakening of labor a trend that is continuing.
All of that said, being “qualified” in this environment is the bare minimum. What makes you exceptional, or at the very least well above average? The ability to describe/articulate/persuade employers of this is central to your ability to land an interview. And you need to be able to do it in several different “formats” – your resume, your cover letter, your LinkedIn profile, and your networking outreach.
Focus on the impact you’ve had on your work product, your workplace, or your fellow worker. How have you made a difference? Just articulating the positions that you’ve held, along with your primary responsibilities, isn’t nearly enough.
